Small, everyday actions that help create more inclusive, high-performing teams

Building a more inclusive workplace does not require a leadership title. Small, everyday actions shape how people experience their teams, how comfortable they feel contributing, and how effectively teams work together.

These behaviours may seem simple, but over time they help create more inclusive, high-performing teams. Here are four actions anyone can start today.

1. Make Space for Different Voices

In meetings or team discussions, notice who is speaking and who is not. Creating space for quieter voices or inviting input from others helps ensure different perspectives are heard.

This can be as simple as asking:

  • “Does anyone else want to share a perspective?”
  • “I’d love to hear from others.”
  • “I think Sofia was still sharing, let’s come back to that.”

Small moments like this help create more inclusive conversations and stronger collaboration.

2. Be Curious, Not Assumptive

We all bring different experiences, backgrounds, and working styles. Asking questions with curiosity helps avoid assumptions and builds understanding across teams.

For example:

  • “What works best for you?”
  • “How would you approach this?”
  • “Is there anything we should consider?”

Curiosity helps create more inclusive and effective teamwork.

3. Acknowledge Contributions

Recognition helps people feel valued and supported. Taking a moment to acknowledge someone’s contribution in a meeting or message can make a meaningful difference.

This might look like:

  • Highlighting someone’s idea
  • Thanking a teammate publicly
  • Giving credit when ideas are built upon
  • Noticing behind-the-scenes work

When contributions are recognized, engagement and team performance improve.

4. Use Inclusive Communication

Inclusive communication helps ensure everyone feels respected and able to contribute. This can include:

  • Avoiding interrupting
  • Using clear and accessible language
  • Being mindful of tone
  • Checking for understanding
  • Sharing context so everyone can participate

These small behaviours help create more respectful and effective collaboration.

Creating an inclusive workplace doesn’t happen all at once. It grows through small, intentional actions over time. When we make space for different perspectives, remove barriers, challenge bias, and communicate thoughtfully, we create environments where people feel respected and able to contribute in meaningful ways. These everyday choices build trust, strengthen relationships, and shape culture.
