Joanna (she/her) is a writer, researcher, and editor based in Vancouver, Canada on the
ancestral, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish),
and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Joanna has a background in environmental geography and a commitment to building social connections for more welcoming, resilient, and sustainable communities. She is interested in how organizations – particularly environmental organizations and academic institutions – can challenge longstanding biases and take action on new, more inclusive ways of building knowledge and protecting the environment. With Inclusivity, she explores how organizations are identifying barriers to inclusion and seeking to address them through initiatives at many scales.
Joanna has a PhD in human geography from UBC, a Master’s of Social Science (with distinction) from the London School of Economics, and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo. She has worked with academics, non-profits, publishers, international institutions, and writers of all kinds in the realms of environmental writing and learning.
Joanna is also a creative writer, with a love for stories about family, the natural world, and ordinary everyday life. She enjoys facilitating writing workshops. In her spare time, she like reading, swimming, and hanging out in the neighbourhood with her family.
